Defra Group Finance have a number of apprentice roles which are dispersed over the country (1 x Leeds, 1 x Bristol, 2 x Peterborough, 1 x Reading, 2 x London,) which are available under a fixed term appointment
Defra is a Government department with an annual Departmental Expenditure Limit budget of around £2bn. It also manages over £3bn of European Union money which will become Exchequer funded when EU Exit is complete. This year the Government launched its landmark 25 Year Plan to Improve the Environment. This recognises the natural environment as being our most precious inheritance and sets out plans to protect and enhance our landscape and habitats for the next generation. There could not be a more challenging or exciting place to work for someone wanting to get involved in ground-breaking financial work in government.
These roles involve performing a wide range of essential accounting activities which need to be completed accurately and in a timely fashion with attention to detail. Successful candidates will work in partnership with other finance colleagues to deliver a professional financial service for customers. They will work as part of a team and will be expected to contribute to the overall smooth running of the team, including suggesting ideas for improvements. They will often work on several tasks at the same time and will need manage their own priorities. They will also interact with budget holders, project managers, the outsourced transaction services team and other members of the wider finance community. They will be expected to behave professionally when answering telephone calls, attending meetings and providing written communications.
Apprenticeship training is delivered via an approved Apprenticeship Framework which will ensure that you receive excellent educational training backed up with relevant practical experience. In Defra the approved training provider for Apprenticeships is Arch Apprentices. Whilst gaining practical experience, apprentices will also undertake formal training and examinations to achieve a recognised professional accountancy qualification, managed by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT).
The essential criteria is:
2 or more A levels above grade C,
5 GCSEs at above grade C including Mathematics and English,
and experience of using MS Office – Outlook, Excel and Word.
