The electrical contracting industry is part of the construction industry. The role will involve the installation of electrical services, both inside and outside buildings and structures such as Stadium, Warehouses, Hotels, Hospitals, Schools, Factories etc.

The role will enable you to

  • Assist a skilled Electrician by supplying materials, equipment, and tools at the scene of jobs
  • Participate in laying, pulling and stringing cables and in installing full containment systems
  • Participate as a trainee in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wiring systems and other electrical fixtures and electric or electronic equipment
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service

Tasks Include:

  • Heavy manual labour requiring manual dexterity under varying weather conditions
  • Physical inventory of materials
  • To use calibrated instruments to measure electrical current and voltages
  • To draw, interpret and read graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids
  • To comprehend and make inferences from written material
  • To use common hand tools, such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, or similar tools
  • To work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
  • To work from technical plans and drawings in the installation of lighting, sockets and switches and in the maintenance of electrical appliances
  • To ensure the safe use of electrical installations through periodic testing in accordance with health and safety regulations
  • To identifying faults and administering repairs to faulty electrical equipment
  • To work indoors and outdoors and be prepared to work at height
  • To be prepared to travel away from home for long periods of time
  • To develop good working relationships with people
  • To understand wiring and circuit diagrams
  • To inspect and test electrical installations
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on a range of circuits and equipment

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

You must have grade c in maths, English and Science or equivalent

Knowledge and skills are important and the training is demanding

Future prospects

The advertised Apprentice wage will increase yearly or upon completion of progressive stages.  After initially qualifying, you could go on to supervisory roles, senior management positions or move into another internal specialist dept

Training provider

The JTL electrical installation apprenticeship is an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3 lasting approximately four years. As a JTL apprentice you’ll be in full time employment with a local company receiving a good wage from day one. You’ll spend time learning your trade by gaining hands-on-experience working on-site with your employer, as well as attending a JTL approved college or training centre to learn the theoretical knowledge you will need.

For the Advanced Apprenticeship, the framework reflects a higher level of competence and knowledge, for electricians, the competence and knowledge elements are combined in a qualification called the ‘Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems & Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)’ This structure is reflected in the new electrical framework as follows, with ELTOC1 being the industry specific requirement:

  • An NVQ at Level 3 Installation electrician / maintenance electrician (the competence part)
  • A knowledge based element at Level 3
  • Transferable Skills at Level 2

  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills
  • Any industry specific requirement
