Description of the job
The Flight Physics centre of competence is a trans-national organisation, responsible for the non-specific design activities that
are used for the detailed design of the aircraft components. Within Flight Physics in the UK, there are four areas:
Aerodynamics, Loads and Aeroelastics, Mass Properties and Flight Physics Capability.
– Aerodynamics: Primarily responsible for designing the wing shape, developing the aircraft configuration and characterising the
aerodynamic behaviour of the aircraft around the flight envelope.
– Loads & Aeroelastics: Defines the loads that the aircraft will experience on ground and in flight, at the most extreme conditions
that could be encountered. The team develop and apply models to represent the response of the aircraft and are responsible for
ensuring aircraft are free from divergent aeroelastic behaviour.
– Mass Properties: Responsible for tracking and predicting aircraft weight, working with design teams to achieve the optimum
weight for any aircraft
component, developing and validating mass prediction tools to forecast the component and aircraft weight.
– Flight Physics Capability: Responsible for methods and tools development to support the Flight Physics Community
Flight Physics is looking for talented, motivated people, with at least two years academic study completed and a strong interest
in a career in the aerospace industry, to come into these teams.
Work type can vary by team, with each team working on multiple projects, but the majority of Flight Physics activities are
focussed on aircraft programmes such as A350XWB, A320neo and A330neo. Also, research programmes and capability/tool
development. A typical internship will comprise of a main project that will run for the length of the placement, on a topic relevant
to that teams activities, with additional shorter tasks to give exposure to a range of work. Support is readily provided from within
the team, but an intern will be expected to take ownership of their tasks and be proactive, engaging with colleagues and
managers whenever required.
You must be an undergraduate for the full duration of the placement studying towards a degree in one of the following:
Mechanical (With Aerospace bias)
Physics (With Aerospace bias)
Successful applicants will possess a good technical knowledge of aerospace fundamentals and analytical ability, able to apply
knowledge to unfamiliar problems, but also proactivity, teamwork and communication skills.
Successful applicants will be accepted into Flight Physics and will be placed into one of the four areas mentioned above.
The assessment centre for this opportunity will take place on 18th January 2018
