Level 4 Garment Technology for Fashion

Course Overview

This Garment Technology course is an excellent alternative to an apprenticeship, training you two days per week enabling enough time to work part-time whilst you study. This exclusive one year course provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Garment Technology. You will study the entire life-cycle of a garment, starting from the initial development with Designers and Buyers, through to the fitting and testing process, and then into mass production. This course is extremely hands-on, which will give you plenty of opportunities to get creative.

What is Garment Technology, and what does a Garment Technologist do?

A Garment Technologist is responsible for ensuring that garments make it from concept all the way through to the shop floor. This requires working closely with designers and buyers. A Garment Tech is in charge of making sure the selected garment fits perfectly and that details are consistent through all sizes to ensure they reach the stores to the quality standards set by the retailers. Fabrics selected by designers need to be suitable for the styling and wash care requirements set by the retailers so that the styles are fit for purpose.

A Garment Technologist makes important decisions during the creation of a garment and holds key responsibilities such as:

  • Advising on the right fabrics to use
  • Suggesting changes to patterns and designs
  • Making sure manufacturing of a garment remains in budget
  • Overseeing fabric testing and fit sessions
  • Working with samples to balance designer’s/buyer’s vision with budget, fit and manufacturing needs

Garment Techs must be aware of current trends, budget and any manufacturing constraints. To excel in this role, good communication skills are essential as well as an eye for detail. For example, small details such as embroidery, trims and zips can affect fit and therefore need to be scaled for different sizes.

This course includes an invaluable three-week work placement with a high street brand where you will be able to work with garment technology teams analysing fit and understanding why decisions are made. This will provide graduates with the opportunity to develop on the job skills to go straight into the workplace with unrivalled hands on experience. Work placements are full-time for 3 weeks, you will be expected to make your own travel arrangements.

Upon completion you’ll be in the ideal position to apply for one of our specialised degree courses, additional opportunities available to you will include a role as a Garment technologist technician with the view of working your way up to becoming a Garment Technologist. We’ll help you to create the perfect portfolio and CV, putting you head and shoulders above the competition.
