About the job

The 2019 Great Western Railway Operations Apprenticeship Scheme will run in Gloucester, Bristol Parkway, Swindon, Reading and Newton Abbot.

What you’ll be doing

As an Operations Apprentice you’ll work in many areas of the operational business sector both on train and at stations including Station Operations, Gateline, Customer Host, Ticket Office and Revenue Protection, providing the highest level of customer service and being proactive to customer’s needs.  Within each rotation, you will attend the relevant training required to fulfil these roles. Using the Great Experience Makers values, you’ll be supported throughout the scheme and will have the opportunity to learn from our experienced colleagues.

About you

You’ll need to be:

  • Over 16 years of age
  • Living within one hour of the locations listed

As a minimum you’ll need to have:

  • GCSE’s or equivalent level 1 qualification (or predicted results) in Maths and English
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively in teams
  • A determination to succeed
  • A willingness and dedication to learn

About the team

The GWR Apprenticeship team will support you throughout your apprenticeship. In addition, you will be allocated a Mentor along with regular support and interventions from Academic Professionals.

About the location:

All locations have good links to public transport.

Working Pattern:

Shifts will start no earlier than 07:00 hours and finish no later than 20:00 hours. The working week is Monday through Saturday, with a rest day during this period. During periods of training, overnight stays may be required.

Additional Information:

You’ll receive at a minimum our corporate welcome, vocational training, development sessions, team building events and intensive on-the-job training. The scheme offers the opportunity to attain a Passenger Transport Level 2 qualification, and an undergraduate award through the IRO (Institution of Railway Operators) and Glasgow Caledonian University.

You will also be given the opportunity to attain your Duke of Edinburgh Business Gold Award. This is an 18-month course, which has five elements:

  • Residential
  • Volunteering
  • Physical
  • Business Skills
  • Expedition

The apprenticeship scheme starts on 26 August 2019 and is for 18 months.

The salary for this role is £136.50 per week.

Assessment days will take place as follows:

14 & 15 May 2019 – Gloucester, Swindon, Bristol Parkway, Reading

21 May 2019 – Newton Abbot
