Under the guidance and supervision of senior colleagues, carry out a range of data and research tasks for AELP members and the wider Further Education and Skills sector.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
The requirements of the role
Under the supervision of and training from your line manager, office-based colleagues and apprenticeship coach, your role will be to support the AELP Research team by:
Identifying, collecting and migrating data using Excel
Gaining understanding the FE and Skills sector to be able to meaningfully interpreting figures and small data sets
Selecting, summarising and presenting data in chart/table form, in writing and orally
Interpreting data to make conclusions and recommendations, using your knowledge of the FE and Skills sector in England
Taking increasing responsibility for project managing, quantitative and qualitative data analysis and writing up of research projects
Conducting statistical analyses on questionnaire survey data and on large official data sets
Producing dashboards, tools and other techniques for data visualisation
Dealing with correspondence, telephone calls, emails, registration enquiries, queries and invoices/ payments relating to events.
Dealing with general research duties.
Undertaking any other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be required by the events team.

AELP is the most influential trade body for training companies in the UK. All our activities serve its members. This is an exciting apprenticeship opportunity to become a member of our small but growing Research team. In addition to research, we run training events and lobbies government to improve policy for Further Education and Skills.
AELP is based in Bradley Stoke on the north edge of Bristol, near the M5/M4 intersection.
This role will provide an effective means of developing research and data analyst skills for someone looking for a career in research and/or data analytics. Your work will apply these skills to the Further Education and Skills sector.
As an apprentice, you will gain valuable qualifications which demonstrate the new skills you have learned and applied. While doing your apprenticeship, which we expect to last for the first 12 to 24 months of your employment, you will be given time to learn at work on a regular basis and have regular visits from an apprentice coach from an independent training company in addition to the usual line management that all employees receive.
The apprenticeship programme covers data analysis and analytics, data structures, Big Data and processes and tools for data integration.
As AELP’s Research Data Analyst you will take on responsibility for maintaining the current data analysis activities on a variety of government data sets and research projects. We will also look to you to extend our existing data analysis activities by providing new technical data solutions.
You will have particular responsibility for scheduling, analysing and reporting Government statistical publications on, for example, unemployment, NEETs, Ofsted inspection reports and Apprenticeships.
Crucially, we are therefore looking for someone who enjoys using Excel on a daily basis.
In addition to IT skills, you will be expected to develop and apply knowledge about the Further Education and Skills sector to your work.
What we are looking for:
5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) including English Language, Mathematics and ICT (min grade C)
Highly numerate and enjoys using Excel Intermediate level
Keen attention to detail, for example, when manipulating data sheets and creating charts/graphs.
Demonstrable interest in research
Demonstrable interest in the Further Education and Skills sector.
Experience in communicating clearly and effectively, for example in writing emails or talking with colleagues face-to-face and over the phone
Team player, flexible, able to use initiative
Reliable and punctual.
