Not going to Uni? Explore your options!

Not going to uni.

So you’re not 100% sure on whether you want to go to university!  It’s certainly not the only option open to school/A-Level leavers!

On of the main drivers in making such a critical decision is whether or not you know what type of work you want to do – and possibly for the rest of your life!  If you want to be a doctor or a dentist, you’re pretty limited to the university route!  If you aren’t 100% sure yet (and you won’t be alone here) then it’s a great idea to spend some time to explore your options.  There are several places you can get advice including the National Careers Service.  One thing is for sure, you don’t need a degree to be successful!

It is important to really think about the area of work you would be looking to get in to.  Apprenticeships are often seen as an ideal route to most careers and even more so with the impending arrival of the Apprenticeship Levy and the UK’s exit from the European Union; meaning more companies will be building skills from the ground up, which most argue is a fantastic thing for the UK.

Apprenticeships are not an easy option so expect a rigorous process!

Not going to uni could open more doors than it closes.  Applying for an apprenticeship in 2017 should not be seen as an easy route and you will likely be expected to go through a rigorous selection process.  The process will normally start with finding the right role followed by submission of your CV.  Make sure that you spend time building a great CV that does your experience and personality justice.  Most employers will want to see evidence of work experience and the skills you have acquired in your part time work; don’t worry if you have not got work experience in the same sector – extrapolate key skills and make them fit the role you are applying for.

Most apprenticeship providers accept that your work experience will not directly correlate so it is vitally important that your enthusiasm and commitment come across in the interview process.  If you have volunteered, this is normally a huge advantage over other candidates.
