Automotive Apprenticeships: What does it take?

If you love cars and enjoy fixing things, automotive Apprenticeships can lead to a great career for you. The only requirements are GCSE’s in maths, science and English or you can take an automotive course at college to learn the skills needed.

To become a motor vehicle technician, you need to have strong practical skills, problem-solving skills and be able to find faults efficiently. Alongside technical aspects of the industry, being good with people and having great customer service skills will take you that extra mile.

Examples of Automotive Apprenticeships

Over 32 million vehicles are on UK roads and there’s a need for motor and vehicle technicians to keep them roadworthy. This means that there are various areas of specialisation from motorcycles, cars, heavy vehicles or vehicles’ electrical systems.

A popular type of motoring & vehicle Apprenticeship is repair and maintenance. Possible places of work from these include a dealership for a particular manufacturer or an independent garage that deals with different makes.

At an intermediate level, you could be working as a light vehicle service technician, which would require you to learn skills in basic repairs and identifying faults. Advanced level motoring and vehicle apprenticeships then teach you to use sophisticated diagnostic repair equipment.

If you work your way up to enrolling in a higher-level automotive Apprenticeship, there are opportunities to become a master/senior technician or a workshop controller.
