We’re HMGCC, the engineering specialists at the heart of the UK’s national security.
We work with the national security community, UK government, academia, private sector partners and international allies to bring engineering ingenuity to the national security mission, creating tools and technologies that drive us ahead and help to protect the nation.
Your role
As an Electronics Degree Apprentice, you’ll gain all the experience, skills and knowledge you need to launch a fascinating career in electronics engineering. You’ll do a mix of classroom and on-the job learning, splitting your time between a university campus and various mentored worked placements within our electronics teams. And by the end of the programme, you’ll have earned a Bachelor in Engineering (BEng) in Embedded Electronics System Engineering, ready to put your new knowledge to the test helping to protect national security.
You’ll be placed with teams doing everything from designing and testing single board computers to developing software defined radios and much more. From day one, you’ll get involved in real projects, use the latest technologies, and learn from friendly experts who’ll welcome your questions and ideas.
Upon completion of the programme, you’ll have built the foundations of a rewarding career as an electronics engineer. Depending on what you enjoy, you might be designing radio systems, printed circuit boards, data acquisition systems, or fault-finding circuits. Your journey doesn’t finish when you end the apprenticeship – you’ll unlock a career that’s full of opportunity, development and creativity.
What you need
You’ll have (or be predicted to achieve by September 2026) five GCSEs including English language and maths at Grade C/4 or above, as well as at least one further STEM subject such as physics, ICT, computing or electronics.
You might already have some practical experience or simply enjoy exploring programming, computers or electronics as hobby. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, and if your predicted grades aren’t reached we’ll still consider each applicant based on their overall application.
You’ll be curious about new possibilities and creative in your approaches. We welcome ‘what if?’ thinking – you’ll be willing to try new things and enjoy sharing ideas with those around you. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively and be keen to absorb as much knowledge as possible. And because you recognise the impact of what we do, you'll bring integrity and professionalism to your work as we seek to make breakthroughs together.
What we offer
You’ll be surrounded by a cohort who share your passion, as well as colleagues keen to give their expertise and advice. And, you’ll have a mentor for technical guidance as well as a buddy to help you settle into life here – you won’t be on your own.
You’ll also have access to all the benefits and facilities our staff enjoy, including 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), onsite counsellor and plenty of training and development opportunities to support your learning. We also have free secure parking on-site, as well as a free 24-hour gym, a café, restaurant and multi-faith prayer room.
