Apprentice IT Project Manager

If you're curious about how digital projects come to life and want to build a career in the beating heart of the rail industry, this could be your next stop. As an Apprentice IT Project Manager at Northern, you’ll be part of a team that makes change happen – supporting the projects that keep our services running smoothly and our customers moving.

People come to Northern for trains they can rely on – but it’s the innovation behind the scenes that makes the magic happen. Our IT team is growing fast, and with exciting new technologies and major digital projects on the horizon, this is the perfect time to join us. Based mainly at our York office, you'll work alongside experienced project managers, get stuck into real-world challenges, and pick up skills that will set you up for a brilliant future.

What you’ll be doing

  • Helping plan, run and track IT projects, making sure they stay on course.
  • Supporting the management of resources, budgets and timelines.
  • Keeping an eye on scope and progress – and helping to flag risks before they become issues.
  • Assisting with clear, timely communication across teams and stakeholders.
  • Balancing your time between hands-on work and one day a week dedicated to your studies.

About you

Strong communication, good time management and a head for problem solving – that’s three things you’ll bring to the table. You might have some experience already in IT or project management, but what matters most is your willingness to learn and get involved.

You’ll also need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 5 (A* to C), including English and Maths

Why choose an Apprenticeship with Northern?

As part of this Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship, you’ll gain a Prince2 Foundation qualification, learn on the job, and be supported every step of the way. You’ll have regular one-to-one sessions with experienced managers, take part in workshops, get helpful feedback, and have access to all the templates and tools our project managers use day to day.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
