Continuous learning and development: From apprentice to Account Executive at TALA, by Lotta Baud

Completing an apprenticeship marks an important milestone in any career, but it is only the beginning. After moving from an apprentice role to Account Executive at TALA, the importance of continuous learning and development has become increasingly evident. This approach is crucial for maintaining momentum in a dynamic industry like public relations (PR).

Here, I look at the significance of ongoing learning after an apprenticeship, and give my tips on how to continue developing professionally from my experience to date.

1. Be curious

One of the most important aspects of ongoing development is maintaining a sense of curiosity. Even after your apprenticeship ends, it’s essential to keep the same enthusiasm for learning that you had when you first started. As an Account Executive, you'll encounter more complex client needs and delve into the intricacies of campaign management. Embracing a curious mindset helps you stay engaged and continually pick up new skills and insights that can enhance your performance and problem-solving abilities.

2. Maximise any training resources

Another key element is making full use of the resources available to you. Transitioning into a full-time role often comes with access to a broader range of resources compared to an apprenticeship. At TALA, for instance, regular training sessions and workshops are part of our company culture. These opportunities go beyond what you learned during your apprenticeship and provide valuable chances to deepen your knowledge and develop new expertise. Taking advantage of these resources helps you stay ahead in your field and continuously build on your existing skills.

3. Keep networking

Networking is also crucial for ongoing development. While the contacts you made during your apprenticeship are valuable, expanding your network is essential as you advance in your career. Attending industry events, engaging with colleagues, and connecting with new professionals opens up fresh perspectives and opportunities. These interactions can lead to collaborations, new ideas, and insights that are vital for your growth and success in PR.

4. Have a mentor

Seeking guidance and mentorship is another important aspect of continuous learning. The end of your apprenticeship doesn’t mean the end of mentorship. In fact, having someone to turn to for advice becomes even more important as you take on more responsibilities. Whether it’s a manager or a more experienced colleague, their insights and feedback can offer valuable perspectives that go beyond what’s found in textbooks or manuals. This ongoing support helps you navigate your career path more effectively and make informed decisions.

This proactive approach ensures that you remain competitive and innovative in your role.

6. Show you’re putting your skills to practice

Applying what you learn in real-world situations is another way to ensure ongoing development. Your new full-time role provides the perfect opportunity to put your newly acquired skills into practice. Whether it’s leading a project, proposing a new campaign strategy, or tackling a challenging client issue, applying your knowledge not only demonstrates your initiative, but also reinforces your understanding and expertise. This hands-on experience is invaluable for solidifying what you’ve learned and making a tangible impact in your role.

7. Set new goals

Finally, reflecting on your progress and setting new goals is essential for continuous growth. Transitioning from an apprentice to an Account Executive is a significant step, and taking time to reflect on your achievements and areas for improvement helps you stay motivated and focused. Setting new goals—whether it’s mastering a new skill, leading a major project, or exploring a new area of expertise—ensures that you continue to advance in your career and seize new opportunities.

So, while completing an apprenticeship is a notable accomplishment, ongoing development is crucial for long-term success. By staying curious, utilising available resources, expanding your network, seeking guidance, keeping up with industry trends, applying new knowledge and setting new goals, you can ensure that your career remains dynamic and fulfilling for many years to come. Embracing these practices not only enhances your skills and expertise, but also positions you for continued growth and impact in the ever-evolving field of PR.
