Quirky Facts about Apprenticeships

The Careermap team have been looking for some apprentice-related trivia. After a good bit of digging around, we’ve come up with some quirky facts about apprenticeships.

For those curious to learn more about apprenticeships, here goes;

  • Apprenticeships are available for all ages, so long as you're older than 16 year old, there is no upper age limit.
  • Apprenticeships are available in over 170 industries.
  • Industries recruiting apprenticeships include aerospace, fashion, broadcast media and finance
  • There are around 25,000 apprenticeship vacancies available online at any one time (with Careermap being one source)
  • Most apprentices start work between the ages of 19 and 24 compared to 15 and 17 in 1914
  • Believe it or not, 100 years ago an apprentice could be summoned to court for being ‘idle’ or having a ‘bad attitude’
  • Apprenticeships in the UK aren't just for humans! The UK government introduced 'paw-prenticeships' for dogs to become therapy pets in schools and hospitals.
  • 82% of apprentices said their apprenticeship had improved their ability to do the job while 79% said their career prospects had improved.
  • Apprenticeships aren't just for beginners. You can also pursue higher level apprenticeships, equivalent to a bachelor's or even master's degree!
  • Apprenticeships are so popular in the UK that they even have their own week dedicated to celebrating them - National Apprenticeship Week!
