What is a traineeship?

A traineeship provides a learning experience to help prepare young people for their future career opportunities. Through an education and learning programme you’ll gain the appropriate experience and skills needed to succeed in an industry you want to forge a career in. Think one could be right for you? What does a traineeship involve?

Traineeships involve three core areas including the following:

  1. Work experience with an employer

  2. Work preparation with the training provider

  3. If you’ve not already got an English and Maths qualification, then your training provider will support you in gaining them.

Traineeships can last anything from 1 week to 6 months it all depends on what you’re looking to get out of one and the traineeship will be tailored to you and the business.

Will I get paid for doing a traineeship?

Your employer isn’t required to pay you during your traineeship, but some will pay your travel and meal costs and you might be eligible for financial support.

Traineeships are a stepping stone to future career prospects. You might not feel quite ready to kick-start your career with an Apprenticeship or embark on your dream job just yet, but traineeships will help you get there.
