The British Army

Funding university can be difficult, but the Army has many ways to help fund higher education.

Army Officers take charge and provide support for their troops. From the beginning, our Officers will be entrusted with a managerial position, overseeing a group of soldiers under their command. Their leadership abilities and expertise in their field will be utilized to ensure that their team operates productively and to the best of their abilities. Find out about the range of post-16 options available to students. These include:

Internships: The Internship is the opportunity to experience the role of an Army Officer for 6 to 18-months before, during or after university. You will receive the same world class leadership training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as our Army Reserve Officers and then further training afterwards, depending on your role. You will then spend 6 to 18 months attached to a regular Army unit, in the UK and on routine duties around the world, shadowing the daily role of an Army Officer, learning to lead up to 30 troops.

Scholarships: If you have a student who has their heart set on becoming an Officer and are still at school, the Army has a scheme to support them through school and university. The Army Officer Scholarship Scheme (AOSS) is offered to high quality students who have the potential to make excellent Army Officers.

Undergraduate Bursaries: Apply as a student to be an Army Officer, and we could give your students financial support while at university. When they graduate, they will start their Army career training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. They should apply to be an Officer before their final year at university in order to be considered.

Medical Bursaries: Students will need to apply in the first or second year of their degree. They could receive £10,000 (£5,000 for Vet and Pharmacy students) in each of the final three years of their studies, work their foundation years as a medical cadet, and receive a lump sum of £45,000 (or £36,000 for Pharmacists) when they complete the short course at RMA Sandhurst.

STEM Bursary: Students can earn up to £42,750 (5k yearly bursary +tuition fees) when they join the Defence Stem Undergraduate Sponsorship (DSUS). DSUS is designed for students on STEM degree courses commissioning into the Royal Engineers, Royal Signals, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Logistics or Intelligence Corp's.
