Could you be the Bob or Wendy of the Building trade with an Apprenticeship?
As a building Apprentice you will need to be a team player, you need to work together with everyone to get the job done in the best possible way. You’ll learn the value of hard work, team work and determination everyday. No great thing is created suddenly, it will take time but it will be worth it. When you go into a new project you’ll believe in it all the way and you’ll have the confidence in your ability to complete it.
What will I learn from a building Apprentice?
As a building Apprentice you’ll learn valuable skills. You’ll learn that when you truly believe in something, you’ll believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably. There will be a variety in your days, you could be doing anything from repairing small maintenance jobs, to sorting out the roads, building an extension from scratch, right up to an entire house, you’ll build whatever the client wants. Builders need to have a good level of health, fitness, and most importantly, strength as you’ll be expected to carry heavy objects around on a regular basis.
Women working in the building trade?
Women can work in the building trade, in fact experts say ‘we need more women’. A project named Girls Allowed was recently ran to draw attention to the fact that women are under represented in this trade and want to attract women to the building trade. Perceptions need to be changed, building it much more than just muddy boots. The people, projects and challenges that come with the industry are so diverse. UCATT is redoubling its efforts to fight for dignity and equality for women, so that more want to work in construction.
Your daily responsibilities in the Building trade will depend on your employer whether you’re doing building houses, roads, roofing, dealing with maintenance or repairs.
You might be:
- Carrying out measurements
- Using a mechanical blender
- Laying bricks or tar for roads
- Using tools such as hammers and chisels to alter and refine shape
Whatever you’re doing this will be a career ‘built’ to last.
So, Bob the Builder can we fix it?
Bob the Builder yes YOU can.
