We are proud to announce that we recently became media partners with WorldSkills UK LIVE the UK’s biggest and free skills, careers and apprenticeship event.

WorldSkills UK is passionate about enhancing young people’s careers providing them with the best start to their job and life. WSUK partners with businesses, education and councils to inspire students . and encourage them to consider all of their options so that they can find the right career path for them.

WorldSkills UK works towards improving the reputation of apprenticeships and technical education so young people feel better able to discover different qualification routes. Apprenticeships were once thought to be for those who didn’t receive good grades, but that’s far from the truth.

Apprenticeships can be for anyone who is keen to get out into the world of work but still wants to gain a qualification. A common question asked is ‘but doesn’t that mean I can’t get a degree?’ Not at all! Higher and degree apprenticeships enable young people to qualify with a foundation, HND, full bachelor’s degree (Level 6) or master’s degree (Level 7).

WorldSkills UK are made up of 3 core programmes. These include:

Directions – All pathways must be started and it’s the same with a career path.
WorldSkills UK deliver a number of exciting and engaging events which showcase apprenticeships, employers and training providers to enhance young people’s opportunities.

Champions – WorldSkills UK are dedicated to transforming apprentice and student opportunities through their competitions. You could enter the National Skills Competition and even qualify for the international Competition. These are designed by experts in the industry and focus on equipping young people with world class skills. If you’re driven and want to pursuit skills at the highest level, then this could be a fantastic opportunity for you!

Accelerate – Created to fast-track young people’s developments and skill sets, this programme combines research, reports and thinking to design products and services to the business and education sectors.

WorldSkills UK LIVE

WorldSkills UK LIVE is an event which you really don’t want to miss! It runs from the 21st of November to the 23rd November 2019 and is held at the NEC in Birmingham. WorldSkills UK LIVE is the largest apprenticeship, skills and careers event in the UK and focuses on four areas:

The event encourages young people to get involved and try things they’ve never done before. From exploring activities such as TV production, floristry, 3D modelling and demolition simulation, and much more. Students will get hands on and discover job related skills they may not have thought about.

These sessions will be led by industry experts based on an experiential careers advice model. The whole day will open up opportunities to work that excites, and on the job experiences.

Expert career advice

The day will also give students the chance to receive impartial, expert career guidance, the option to speak with employers and training providers and to find out more about potential career routes.

Spotlight talks

Spotlight talks will be going on throughout the day, young people will be able to listen to inspiring people who can share how they got to where they are now. After all, there is nothing more reliable than hearing it straight from the horse’s mouth. This is the perfect opportunity to gain invaluable insights and information – perhaps inspiring your students to consider a career bath they haven’t heard of before!

Meet employers

WorldSkills UK LIVE brings together hundreds of the UK’s top employers and training providers so visitors can speak with a diversity of experts about their next steps when considering entering the world of work.

  • They can discuss future opportunities with colleges, employers and career advisers
  • Discover what employees are looking for in potential employers
  • Find out more information about what they offer
  • Discover what training, skills and apprenticeship opportunities are available
  • Find out more about work experience, taster days and how teachers/career leaders can receive career messages from employers and training providers
Not everybody learns from a piece of paper, some people learn from trying out new things. And I think this event is the best way to show them how to do new things.

“What is…?” demonstrations

These are practical demonstrations that let visitors get up close to look at different skills presented by professionals eg What is…forensic science? What is plumbing….? etc

This enables visitors to develop a deeper understanding of the different skills and careers involved, looking at it from a real-world context.

WorldSkills UK National Finals

It’s time to compete! The WorldSkills UK National Finals enables talented and aspiring apprentices and students to battle it out to be named as the UK’s best in their chosen skill. As a response to the UK’s Industrial Strategy and new emerging roles, individuals will be challenged and assessed on their applied knowledge, employability skills and technical ability which will be based on performance criteria.

Finalists will be competing for Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals with the amazing opportunity that could see them be selected to train for international competitions through joining Squad UK!

The Teacher Hub

This is the chance for teachers, parents and guardians to attend a number of free seminars which will explore employability skills, linking skills and subjects (Gatsby Benchmark 4), encounters with higher and further education (Gatsby Benchmark 7), personal guidance and the embedding this to careers (Gatsby Benchmark 8) plus find out everything you need to know about apprenticeships.

WorldSkills UK Champions

WorldSkills UK Champions meet with visitors at the event to discuss what it’s really like to compete at a national and international level!, and are experienced in relating to young people in an open and encouraging way by talking about their own experiences in planning their career route.

Resources, career advice and role models

WorldSkills UK is supported by many career successful industry experts, local heroes and Skills Champions, who all promote WorldSkills UK and its incredible work! They are always striving to help teachers, and young people with career guidance.  One example of this is the WorldSkills UK Career Planning Toolkit – a suite of 19 lesson plans and videos designed to inspire students to take more responsibility for their own career planning. To download a free toolkit visit https://www.worldskillsuk.org/directions/careers-advice-resources/careers-advice-toolkit

Parents have a major influence on their children’s career choices so understanding their options is vital. A lot has changed over the years in the career world and it can be daunting for them when young people ask the question ‘what next?’.

Join WorldSkills UK LIVE and Careermap from the 21st of November to the 23rd November and get involved! We’ll be handing out copies of our Careermag and be there to give any advice you need as a teacher or career leader! Can’t join us in person? We don’t want anyone to miss out so we’ll be running a live broadcast so you can join us virtually.

We hope to see you all there!
