Considering an apprenticeship in engineering? Are you planning to start one before October 2017?

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) runs an Engineering Horizons Bursary scheme, which provides aspiring engineers and technicians with financial support for the duration of their apprenticeship.

As a UK resident on an IET-approved apprenticeship, you could receive £1,000 for each year of your apprenticeship (for up to four years).

Laura Murphy, an apprentice at BAE Systems, was recently awarded an IET Engineering Horizons Bursary, supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Laura enjoys delving into the world of puzzles and problem solving. From a young age, she was fascinated by how things worked and wanted to find out exactly how and why things operated in the way they did.

Attracted by a more hands-on approach to learning, Laura opted for an apprenticeship. This meant moving from Cardiff to Kent – leaving her home town, family and friends, and becoming self-sufficient.

Laura explains: “Not only will the bursary ease some of the financial burdens I now face as an independent woman; the extra resources that I can access from receiving the bursary will be invaluable to my career progression.”

In addition to receiving financial support, bursary recipients get free membership at the IET – for as long as they are an apprentice. They can get help from the IET on taking their career further, including gaining a professional engineering status such as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) .

Recipients of the bursary can also get involved in the IET’s work, becoming ambassadors for the Institution and the engineering profession.

Laura says:  “I am looking forward to getting the opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn from their experiences, so that I am able to enhance my own.”

Interested in the IET Engineering Horizons Bursary? The deadline for applications is 12 October 2017.
