JTL apprenticeships – The Gateway to a Rewarding Lifelong Career | July 2021

Who are JTL?

JTL are a non-profit charity and one of the largest work-based learning providers in the UK. They have provided work-based learning services for over 30 years specialising in apprenticeship training to the building services engineering sector.

JTL’s apprentices are trained to a professional standard, providing them with the skills they need to pursue lifelong careers. Their apprenticeship courses open up new careers for electricians, plumbers, heating engineers and many more skilled professionals.

The Benefits of Apprenticeships

With the opportunity to earn whilst you learn and starting salaries in the region of £21,000 per year for electricians, apprenticeships are an attractive rout for many young people.

Apprenticeships also offer the chance to gain valuable work experience and receive a professional standard qualification with no debt.

Entry Requirements

In this event, we discuss the entry requirements for the various courses at JTL. Applicants will ideally possess GCSEs in maths and English at grade C / grade 4 or higher or equivalent.

Applicants can also work towards achieving their level 2 qualifications in maths and English as part of their apprenticeship. These qualifications will need to be achieved before an End Point Assessment is taken, usually in Year 4 of the apprenticeship.

You can apply for an apprenticeship while still in education, but need to have left before starting their apprenticeship. 

Applicants will also be required to pass JTL’s online exam, which is discussed during the event. The team give their hints and tips for students and share resources that can help with the online exam.

Individuals will also need an employer before they start an apprenticeship, although they can still apply before they have arranged one.

JTL Courses on Offer

JTL offer a variety of courses that are discussed during the event. In this event, JTL break down the skills and knowledge that each course offers, as well as give details on the length of each course, locations available, the different pathways individuals can take and also future career prospects after completing their course with JTL.

Courses on offer include:

Apprenticeship Courses

  • Electrical Engineering – Level 3
  • Plumbing & Domestic Heating – Level 3
  • Building Services Engineering  – Levels 2 & 3
  • Gas Engineering Operative – Level 3
  • Fire, Emergency and Security Systems – Level 3
  • Property Maintenance Operative – Level 2



  • Traineeships are a stepping stone onto apprenticeships
  • A great way for individuals to discover if they want to progress onto an apprenticeship for a particular trade
  • Last 10 weeks (on average) with around 6 weeks in the classroom
  • Trainees then have 4 weeks work experience with an employer where they will learn on the job practical knowledge
  • Currently available in Birmingham, Nottingham,  Ashford and Orpington.

How JTL Teach

JTL has their own training centres and has partnerships with over 100 colleges across England and Wales. Their main start dates are in September and January to coincide with college intakes, but they also recruit throughout the year.

Teaching is delivered in either a block release or day release format and each apprentice has a dedicated training officer that supports them throughout their apprenticeship as they develop a portfolio of their work.

Throughout this event, the team discuss their approaches to learning and how they have overcome the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic to adapt to a blended approach to learning online and in their training centres.

This event also offers the chance to listen to existing apprentices with JTL as they share their experiences.  Apprentices give an insight into how they have developed and grown during their training with JTL, share tips for future apprentices and what their future plans are.

Interested individuals can apply online and will need to pass JTL’s online tests. The team discuss in detail how the application process works and share their expert advice on how to be successful with applications.
